What is inheritance tax?
Inheritance tax in Japan is a tax paid by someone who inherits money or property from someone who has died. All heirs are liable to pay inheritance tax on any wealth and land in Japan and any welth you acquire outside Japan.
"Do I have to pay inheritance tax on inheritance within Japan, even if I am a foreign national? Or Do I have to pay inheritance tax on inheritance located outside of Japan?"
When you receive or acquire any wealth, land or property through inheritance and you have an address in Japan at the time of receiving said inheritance, you are legally obliged to pay tax on all inherited properties. This applies even if you are a foreign national holding a foreign nationality.
This does not apply if you are a temporary resident, such as having resided in Japan for less than 10 years.
